The things you actually need for those first few months — without buying the entire baby aisle.

If you’ve ever searched “newborn essentials” on Pinterest, Amazon or Google, you already know the problem.

Apparently your newborn needs a wipe warmer, six kinds of swaddles, a bottle sterilizer that looks like a small appliance from NASA and approximately 47 outfits.

We disagree.

Newborns are surprisingly simple creatures. They eat, sleep, poop, cry, repeat — occasionally all at once.

So instead of giving you a giant registry checklist, we pulled together the newborn products we’d actually consider buying.

Our criteria?

Useful. Well-made. Lower-tox where possible. Better materials. Less unnecessary plastic. And ideally something you’ll still want in your house six months from now.

Because “baby product” shouldn’t automatically mean “plastic thing you use twice.”

1. Bambo Nature Baby Diapers

If you’re looking for a more eco-conscious disposable diaper, Bambo Nature is one of the first brands we’d look at.

The brand is known for its Nordic environmental certifications and fragrance-free, hypoallergenic approach. It’s also one of the more readily available eco-leaning diaper options for Canadian shoppers.

And importantly: it’s still a diaper.

It doesn’t require you to wash anything.

Why we like it:

  • Nordic Swan Ecolabel
  • Fragrance-free
  • Dermatologically tested
  • Eco-conscious manufacturing
  • Available in newborn and infant sizes

Our take: If you’re not ready for cloth diapers but want to make a more environmentally conscious disposable choice, this is a great place to start.

2. WaterWipes Baby Wipes

Sometimes the best product is the one that doesn’t try to do 14 things.

WaterWipes are made with 99.9% purified water and a small amount of fruit extract, making them a popular option for newborns and sensitive skin.

They’re also ridiculously convenient.

Because newborn life is not the time to discover you’re out of wipes.

Why we like them:

  • Very short ingredient list
  • No added fragrance
  • Designed for newborn and sensitive skin
  • Convenient for diaper changes and on-the-go messes

One caveat: They’re still disposable wipes, so “simple ingredients” doesn’t automatically mean “zero environmental impact.”

We’re fans of making the better choice where it’s practical — not pretending disposable products don’t exist.

3. Philips Avent Natural Glass Bottles

If you’re looking to reduce the amount of plastic touching your baby’s milk, glass bottles are an obvious place to start.

The Philips Avent Natural Glass line uses tempered glass and is widely available, which is a major bonus when you’re trying to find replacement nipples or additional bottles at 2 a.m.

Because apparently that’s when babies decide they have opinions about bottles.

Why we like them:

  • Tempered glass
  • Silicone nipples
  • Easy to clean
  • Durable
  • Widely available
  • Compatible with the broader Avent ecosystem

You don’t necessarily need twelve.

Start with a few and see what your baby likes.

4. Woolino 4-Season Ultimate Baby Sleep Sack

This is one of our favourite “buy once, use for ages” baby products.

The Woolino 4-Season Ultimate Baby Sleep Sack uses merino wool and is designed to regulate temperature across a wide range of room temperatures.

It also grows with your baby, fitting approximately 2–24 months, depending on the model.

That’s a lot better than buying a new sleep sack every three months.

Why we like it:

  • Merino wool
  • Temperature-regulating
  • Long-lasting
  • Adjustable
  • Designed for multiple seasons
  • Available through Amazon Canada

Woolino also uses certified materials including organic cotton and responsibly sourced merino wool in its products.

5. Burt’s Bees Baby Organic Cotton Bodysuits

Newborn wardrobes do not need to be complicated.

A handful of soft bodysuits and sleepers will get you much further than a closet full of adorable outfits that somehow become too small before you’ve managed to photograph them.

Burt’s Bees Baby is a great Amazon option for organic cotton basics.

Why we like them:

  • 100% organic cotton options
  • GOTS-certified organic cotton on many products
  • Soft and breathable
  • Simple everyday designs
  • Easy to find on Amazon Canada

Our recommendation?

Buy fewer outfits and more sleepers.

Your newborn will spend approximately 90% of their life looking like a tiny burrito anyway.

6. Organic Cotton Muslin Swaddles

Swaddles are one of those newborn products that actually earn their place.

They’re useful for swaddling, burping, stroller shade, tummy-time blankets and approximately 900 other situations you didn’t anticipate.

Look for 100% cotton muslin rather than complicated synthetic blends.

And you absolutely do not need a drawer full.

Three or four is plenty to start.

7. Organic Cotton Burp Cloths

Let’s be honest.

You could probably make this entire section:

Buy burp cloths. Lots of them.

Newborns have a remarkable ability to turn a clean shirt into a laundry emergency.

We like organic cotton because it’s soft, washable and reusable.

Look for:

  • 100% cotton
  • Organic certification where possible
  • High absorbency
  • Machine washable
  • Simple construction

8. ATTITUDE Baby 2-in-1 Shampoo & Body Wash

If you’re looking for a Canadian brand with a more ingredient-conscious approach, ATTITUDE is an easy one to put on the list.

Its Baby Leaves line includes EWG Verified products, plant- and mineral-based formulas and fragrance-free options.

It’s also made in Canada.

Why we like it:

  • Canadian brand
  • EWG Verified options
  • Plant- and mineral-based ingredients
  • Vegan
  • Fragrance-free option
  • Easy to find on Amazon Canada

And you don’t need five different baby bath products.

One good wash will do the job.

9. ATTITUDE Baby Bottle & Dishwashing Liquid

This one isn’t glamorous.

It is, however, something you’ll use constantly.

If you’re trying to reduce unnecessary fragrances and harsh ingredients around your baby’s feeding equipment, a dedicated baby dishwashing liquid can make sense.

ATTITUDE’s Baby Bottle & Dishwashing Liquid is unscented and designed specifically for bottles, dishes and feeding accessories.

10. Haakaa Silicone Manual Breast Pump

Whether you’re exclusively breastfeeding, pumping occasionally or simply trying to catch the milk that otherwise ends up in your nursing bra, the Haakaa has earned its spot in the newborn conversation.

It’s made from silicone, requires no batteries and is wonderfully uncomplicated.

No charging.

No settings.

No app.

Bless.

Why we like it:

  • Simple silicone design
  • No batteries
  • Easy to clean
  • Compact
  • Reusable

11. Ergobaby Embrace Newborn Carrier

There will be moments when your newborn wants to be held and you would also like to accomplish literally anything else.

Enter the baby carrier.

The Ergobaby Embrace is designed for newborns and young babies and is a popular option for parents who want something softer and simpler than a large structured carrier.

Why we like it:

  • Newborn-friendly
  • Soft and comfortable
  • Multiple carrying positions
  • Easy to put on
  • Long enough lifespan to get plenty of use

12. Haakaa Silicone Breastfeeding Accessories

If you’re already buying a Haakaa pump, keeping a few simple silicone accessories on hand can help reduce the number of disposable feeding products you go through.

Look for reusable milk collectors and silicone storage/feeding accessories where they make sense for your routine.

The philosophy: reusable beats disposable when it’s actually convenient enough that you’ll use it.

13. FridaBaby Nasal Aspirator

Nobody tells you how much time you will spend thinking about your newborn’s nose.

And then suddenly you’re researching baby nasal aspirators at midnight.

The FridaBaby NoseFrida is a simple, reusable nasal aspirator that has become a staple in many newborn households.

It uses replaceable filters rather than requiring an entire new device.

Why we like it:

  • Reusable device
  • Replaceable filters
  • Simple design
  • Small enough for the diaper bag
  • Useful during those inevitable stuffy-nose days

Shop FridaBaby on Amazon Canada →
https://www.amazon.ca/s?k=FridaBaby+NoseFrida

14. Simple Baby Nail File

Newborn nails are tiny.

Newborn nails are also surprisingly sharp.

A simple baby nail file can be less intimidating than trying to use adult nail clippers on fingers the size of your pinky.

Look for a gentle electric file or simple baby-specific nail-care set.

15. A Simple Digital Thermometer

This is one of those things you hope you won’t need often.

But when you need a thermometer, you really want to know exactly where it is.

Choose a reputable digital thermometer designed for infants and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use.

16. Organic Cotton Hooded Towel

A tiny baby wrapped in a tiny hooded towel is objectively one of the better parts of newborn life.

But beyond being adorable, a good cotton towel is simply useful.

Look for organic cotton where possible and avoid unnecessary synthetic blends.

17. Portable Changing Pad

A portable changing pad is one of those products you don’t think you need until you are changing a newborn in the back seat of your car.

Choose something wipeable and compact.

That’s it.

No need to overcomplicate the diaper bag.

18. A Simple Diaper Caddy

Keep your diaper-changing essentials together and you’ll save yourself a surprising amount of walking.

A basic caddy can hold:

  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Cream
  • Burp cloths
  • Extra onesie
  • Hand sanitizer

Then move it wherever you need it.

Bedroom. Nursery. Living room.

Wherever baby has decided to make their office for the day.

19. A Good Water Bottle for Mom

Technically, this isn’t a newborn product.

Technically, you will still use it approximately 400 times a day.

If you’re breastfeeding or simply recovering from childbirth, having water beside you constantly is one of those tiny things that makes life easier.

We’d choose stainless steel or glass over another plastic bottle.

https://www.amazon.ca/s?k=stainless+steel+water+bottle+mom

20. Snacks. Seriously.

We’re putting snacks on the newborn essentials list.

Because nobody talks about how difficult it is to eat a proper meal while holding a newborn.

Keep easy options nearby:

  • Protein bars
  • Trail mix
  • Fruit
  • Crackers
  • Nuts
  • Anything you can eat with one hand

This is perhaps the least glamorous recommendation on the list.

It may also be the most important.

What We Wouldn’t Buy Before Baby Arrives

Here’s where we’re going to save you some money.

You probably don’t need:

  • A wipe warmer
  • 15 different bottles
  • A giant newborn wardrobe
  • Baby shoes
  • A dedicated baby food maker
  • A fancy diaper disposal system
  • Every viral TikTok gadget
  • Five different kinds of swaddles
  • A nursery full of plastic organizers

Buy the basics.

Meet your baby.

Figure out what you actually need.

Then Amazon can bring you the rest in two days.

Our Newborn Shopping Philosophy

At Best for Baby Collective, we’re not interested in creating a perfectly “non-toxic” home.

Honestly, we’re not convinced that exists.

We’re interested in better choices.

When there’s an easy opportunity to choose glass instead of plastic, organic cotton instead of conventional, reusable instead of disposable or a simpler ingredient list instead of a complicated one — we’ll usually take it.

But we’re also parents.

Sometimes you need the thing that arrives tomorrow.

Sometimes disposable wipes are the only thing keeping you sane.

Sometimes the $20 Amazon version is perfectly good.

That’s real life.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s making thoughtful choices where they actually make sense.

And maybe buying slightly less stuff while we’re at it.

A Note About Our Links

Some of the links in this article are Amazon links. When we become an Amazon Associate, we may earn a small commission from qualifying purchases made through our links, at no additional cost to you.

We don’t recommend a product simply because it’s available on Amazon. We look for products that offer a thoughtful combination of materials, function, durability, transparency and value.

Because the best baby product is usually the one you actually use.
