Baby bathtubs are one of those purchases that can seem incredibly important before your baby arrives.

Then you realize you have a tiny human, a bathtub full of water and approximately two hands to make the whole thing happen.

So we’re looking for something simple, safe and thoughtfully made.

And when it comes to a more ingredient- and material-conscious baby bath, the Stokke Flexi Bath is one of our favourites.

Why We Like It

The Stokke Flexi Bath is made primarily from polypropylene, and Stokke’s compliance documentation confirms that the tub meets applicable Canadian and U.S. safety standards, including requirements relating to lead, phthalates, BPA and heavy metals. (Stokke)

We wouldn’t call it plastic-free — it isn’t.

But when you’re shopping for a baby bathtub, that’s not necessarily the right goal.

Instead, we’re looking for a tub made from a material with a straightforward composition and without some of the chemicals we’re particularly interested in avoiding.

That’s a much more realistic approach.

BPA-Free, Phthalate-Free & PVC-Free

This is one of the reasons the Flexi Bath caught our attention.

The tub uses polypropylene and is described as free from BPA, phthalates and PVC. (Nontoxic Nook)

Polypropylene isn’t a natural material, but it is one of the plastics we feel more comfortable choosing when plastic is the practical option.

And for something that’s going to hold warm water against baby’s skin, material choice matters.

It Folds Flat

This might actually be our favourite feature.

The Flexi Bath folds down so you can store it away when bath time is over.

Because unless you live in a house with a dedicated baby-bathroom wing, storage space is precious.

It also makes the tub much easier to take along when you’re travelling or visiting family.

Baby bathtub that disappears when you’re done using it? Yes please.

It Grows With Baby

With the appropriate newborn support, the Flexi Bath can be used from the newborn stage and then continue to work as your baby grows.

Once your baby is sitting independently, the newborn support can be removed and the tub continues to work as a regular baby/toddler bath.

That means you’re not necessarily buying a new bathtub every few months.

And we’re always fans of products that can stick around for longer.

What About the Newborn Support?

If you’re using the Flexi Bath with a newborn, you’ll want the newborn support designed for the tub.

It provides additional support for younger babies who aren’t sitting independently yet.

Just remember: a bath support does not replace active supervision.

Health Canada specifically warns that bath seats and supports should never be relied upon to prevent drowning. Babies should remain within sight and reach throughout the bath, and if you need to leave the bathroom, take your baby with you. (Canada)

Is It Actually “Non-Toxic”?

This is where we’re going to be picky about our wording.

We like the Stokke Flexi Bath because of its material specifications and safety testing, but we wouldn’t tell you that any plastic baby product is magically “100% non-toxic.”

That’s not how materials work.

Instead, we’re looking for:

  • BPA-free materials
  • Phthalate compliance
  • No PVC
  • No unnecessary soft foam
  • Transparent material information
  • Appropriate safety testing
  • A product designed to last

The Flexi Bath checks a lot of those boxes. (Nontoxic Nook)

And honestly, that’s the kind of information we want to see when we’re shopping for our babies.

Our Best for Baby Take

We’re not trying to eliminate every piece of plastic from your home.

Sometimes plastic is the most practical material for the job.

We’re trying to be more thoughtful about which plastics we bring into our homes, what they’re made from and how long they’ll actually be used.

The Stokke Flexi Bath is a good example.

It’s not plastic-free.

It’s a thoughtfully designed baby bath made from polypropylene, designed to fold away, last through multiple stages and meet applicable safety standards.

Less clutter. Fewer unnecessary purchases. Better material choices.

That’s a baby bath we can get behind.
